Thanks to all of you for your prayers as I recuperate from knee surgery. Unfortunately, a rare infection has slowed down healing. The good news is that with the appropriate antibiotics, which must be administered intravenously over the next six weeks, the knee should heal. However, this will keep me from going door-to-door campaigning. I would welcome a phone call from anyone in Lincoln County. I do want to publicly thank my wife, Maria, who has stepped up and not only been my favorite nurse, but the greatest substitute politician that a representative could have. She is truly a “Blessed” lady and named appropriately “Maria.”

Because I was in the hospital, Maria led the ceremony dedicating a section of Highway C at 79 in Old Monroe, for LCPL Patrick Schimmel, who was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 9, 2009. It was my honor to sponsor the bill naming the overpass for Schimmel. The local veterans groups paid for the signs. Additionally, a marble bench was dedicated to all veterans who have served our country, especially those from Old Monroe. Fr. Philip Krahman, Immaculate Conception, gave the blessings and dedication of the memorials. Wayne Henke, a veteran from Old Monroe, led the large group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A letter was read from Governor Jay Nixon and a special House of Representatives Resolution was also presented. Mrs. Schimmel thanked those who came and had a veteran friend of Patrick’s speak to the crowd. Erik Goodge shared personal stories about his Marine buddy.

The Old Monroe American Legion hosted this event and had a cake and coffee reception following the dedication. Thanks to all who helped make this a very special ceremony. It was my honor to help the Old Monroe American Legion pay for the memorial bench. I will be happy to help any other veterans group who would like a similar memorial. May God continue to bless all who have served our country and protect the freedom of the United States of America. It is my hope and prayer that you allow me to serve you one more two-year term as a state representative.
