As a fourth term Representative from Lincoln County, I am very supportive of Governor Jay Nixon’s State of the State speech. He spoke in a non-partisan tone about what is best for Missouri.
The State must be focused on fiscal discipline and job creation by balancing the budget every year and protecting Missouri’s AAA credit rating. We have passed a bipartisan bill credited with saving Missouri’s auto industry, which I voted for. We have held the line on taxes.
Now Missouri’s economy is growing and adding jobs; so far 40,200 jobs in the last twelve months alone have been created. Missouri’s unemployment rate has been below the national average for 40 consecutive months. Ford and General Motors are creating thousands of jobs.
We have an opportunity to make strategic investments like $150 million for education. This includes Early Childhood. Double funding for Missouri preschools, and increases for Early Head Start. For K-12, $100 million should be invested in classrooms and lengthen the school year. For Higher Education we need $34 million based on performance. We will also expand the A+ program statewide.
