Elsberry Alumni Judy Livesay Gomel heads the Business Department at Elsberry Schools. We live in a world where the computer is second nature to many people and especially in the workplace. She spends a lot of time planning and teaching computer/technology techniques to all her classes. The most basic thing that she reinforces is learning the keyboard. Students don’t realize they can accomplish so much more if they just know the placement of the keys. Her class load includes MS Computers, Computer Applications I and II, Multi Media, and Accounting. She also sponsors FBLA, Junior Class and FCA.
This past week she took eleven Elsberry High School FBLA members to the “Duel on the Hill” and” Dynamic Leadership Academy” at Culver-Stockton College in Canton.
“Duel on the Hill” is a team based case competition that encourages students to develop solid leadership skills, create innovative solutions to problems facing their local communities and gain experience working as a team member. EHS students received a case study three weeks ago that caused them to use their critical thinking and problem solving abilities to synthesize the problem and create a viable business solution.
The EHS team of four (Nick Daly, Maggie Spratt, Josie Shanahan and Clair O’Brien) presented their proposal to a panel of judges including professors of the college, prominent community members and local business owners. Although they did not place, the judges were impressed with their presentation skills and believe that they have the ability to dominate future events.
The “Dynamic Leadership Academy” focused on teamwork skills, which are essential in all aspects of life from the basketball court to corporate boardrooms and everywhere in between. Seven students (Mason Cameron, Ethan Miller, Jacob Sabella, Kimmie Croxville, Anthony Muzzey, Sheyana Curtis and Brianna Dickens) spent a part of the day developing their teamwork capabilities through fun, interactive leadership activities that caused them to think outside the box while working in small groups to solve complex challenges.
These challenges included collaboration, analytical, communication and cooperation activities. Cameron and Curtis won a prize for the top team in the analytical activity.
