Teacher Talk

Can you name the planets of our universe?

You might even still think that Pluto is a planet.

Ask any third grade student at Elsberry Schools and they can probably name them for you!

Currently in Science, students are studying the universe, planets and the galaxy that we live in.

Teachers Amanda Niffen, Ed Martinson, and Emily Huber spend time each day doing activities with the children so that they learn and understand all aspects of this subject.

The highlight of this unit will be a field trip to the Challenger Learning Center in St. Louis.

This facility was opened in November of 2003 and gives students the opportunity to take on a role as an astronaut, scientist, or engineer engaged in a simulated space mission.

In addition to the academically-focused activities that are aligned with state education standards, the Challenger experience give students an opportunity to strengthen their teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and decision making skills.

The cost for this adventure is partially funded by a grant that school personnel have secured, but students still have to pay a small fee.
