Elsberry Middle School social studies teacher, Matt Spurling recently organized a Geography Bee for students in grades fifth through eighth. Top finisher for the contest was sixth grader, Trevor Anthony. He will now be able to advance by completing a written test. Depending on the results, he may advance to the state level.

All students in these grades were involved in a preliminary competition, which consisted of each student answering seven questions. There were two students who answered all seven correctly and were automatically in the top ten. Every student that scored six out of seven went to a tie breaker round to determine the rest of the top ten. Those finishing in the top ten, besides Anthony were, Jon Almus, Michael Kelly, Anthony Peterson, Carolyn Wehmeyer, Horizon Hutchinson, Phillip Brickey, Matthew Urban, Tyler Nelson and Beth Like.

On the evening of Monday, Jan 14, the top 10 students competed with a clean slate answering question one at a time. In this final round of the Geography Bee contestants are allowed to miss two questions before being eliminated. The final two contestants faced off in the Championship round to determine the winner.

School staff, family and friends were invited to watch the competition take place.
