Over the course of the past several months The Elsberry Democrat has been closely following the actions of the Elsberry Special Road District, particularly as they relate to the District’s decision to spend the bulk of this year’s repair funds on Hatfield Road and Old Hwy. 79 and its relationship with Missouri Petroleum.
To recap, the District voted during a special meeting held in March to spend approximately $125, 000 to repair sections of Hatfield Road and Old Hwy. 79.
Furthermore, current Special Road District Presiding Commissioner Larry Wheeler and then Commissioner Carolyn Lovelace stated that the decision to focus on those two roads was made after reviewing a report submitted by Pat Palmer of Missouri Petroleum.
The decision has been unpopular with many Elsberry residents who feel that the District’s funds would be more wisely spent on other roads that are used more frequently and have more homes on them.
Each time that one of these residents has voiced his or her displeasure the answer from the Special Road District Board has been the same.
In short, the standard line has been something akin to ‘Don’t blame us. He told us to do it.’, basically implying that the commissioners would not have made the decision that they did had it not been for the recommendations of Palmer and his company.
