Elsberry played host to two very special birthday parties last week.
Martha Vaughn and Doris Reid, both residents of Elsberry, celebrated their 99th birthdays during the first week of July.
Vaughn turned 99 on July 2 and celebrated with friends and family during a surprise party at Broadway Flowers & Fountain that afternoon.
The event was even more special due to the fact that Vaughn shares a birthday with her great granddaughter, Ella Haworth.
When asked how she thought her great grandmother had managed to live to be 99 years old, Haworth replied, “She eats healthy and she eats vegetables every day.”
Vaughn, who is a descendent of the city’s founder Robert Elsberry, said she likes to try to stay healthy by taking a 20-minute walk in the morning and then another one in the afternoon.
“That keeps the old bones going,” said Vaughn.
