According to a newly updated police report, on Wednesday, November 21, there was a two car accident at Hwy. 47 west of Lindsey Rd. at 5:40 a.m.
The head on collision happened during the thick of the fog. Randolph James, 32, of Troy, was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 47 in his 1997 Ford Ranger when he crossed the centerline and met head on with a 1997 Mercury Sable. Angela Simpson, 29, of Winfield was driving the Mercury Sable at the time.
Angela Simpson suffered moderate injuries. Passengers with Simpson were Dana Simpson, 8, moderate injuries; David D. Simpson, 32, moderate injuries; and David W. Simpson, 9, serious injuries and later passed away at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
Randolph James also suffered moderate injuries.
All were wearing their safety devices except David D. Simpson.
The volunteers of the Winfield Foley Fire Protection District were requested to respond to this accident involving multiple entrapped occupants. The scene quickly became busy as the Winfield Foley Fire Protection District, Lincoln County Ambulance District, State Police, and local law enforcement coordinated to mitigate the incident.
During the operations, Highway 47 was closed to traffic in both directions for approximately two hours while the roadway was cleaned up.
Randolph James is currently being held on a Probation and Parole warrant in Lincoln County. As of November 28, the State Highway Patrol, Division C, was seeking charges against James for a DWI, assault and manslaughter.
All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
