Short has been the General Manager of The Democrat since April 25, 2005 when he transferred from his position as Production Manager at the Lincoln County Journal.
In a letter from Lakeway Publishers, Inc. President R. Jack Fishman and Lakeway Publishers of Missouri, Inc. Vice-President Walt Gilbert, “we both feel very strongly that it is very important for community newspapers to put their best foot forward to preserve our freedoms and our smaller communities must continue to lead in these changing times. Your leadership has played an important role in maintaining quality journalism and continuing the important serve we offer to the community.”
Short started in the newspaper business in 1997 as a graphic artist with the Suburban Journals of St. Charles. His stop at the Lincoln County Journal then led to the General Manager following the retirement of longtime Editor Margaret Ann Watts-Herring and Barbara James, who served following Watts-Herring.
“During his tenure at The Elsberry Democrat, Mike has done an excellent job in producing a newspaper that serves the community well,” said Gilbert.
“Michael has a handle on what the readers want and need to know. He is a very computer-savvy person, and this shows is his ability to not only keep the website and Facebook entities up to date, but also in his live coverage of sports events.”
Not only has Short been the General Manager for the last 13 years but he has also handled many other aspects such as advertising sales and editorial duties.
“He also does a great job in advertising sales, and often produces unique publications which become keepsakes for many people,” said Gilbert. “I know the community joins me in congratulating Michael on his new title of publisher at The Elsberry Democrat.”
