For approximately eight years now, Matt Jones has served Elsberry as one of the leading insurance agents, for Shelter Insurance.
“My mother’s side of the family was originally from Elsberry and we’ve always wanted to live on a farm and when the opportunity came around for us interview with the Shelter Insurance agency, my wife and I felt it would be a good road for us to take,” explained Jones. “Although it’s not what I went to school for, as I have a degree in Agriculture Mechanization, it does allow a good tie in because we sell a lot of farm insurance.”
Jones went on to explain how he more so went to school to be in the Ag Equipment industry, which in his words was definitely two side of the spectrum. However, he did say he does really enjoy what he does now, as it allows him to help people in need.
“I mean sometimes people aren’t always happy with premiums but when there’s a claim it’s nice to be able to help them out of a bad situation, financially,” said Jones. “That’s probably the greatest part about my job and my office will always be in Elsberry.”
Jones did say, however, that one day he may move the office so he can expand into other areas, but without a doubt it will always be in Elsberry. According to him, he would never take his office out the community because he feels as though what he does is a great part of the community and many have come to rely on his advice and ability to get the job done.
“We offer auto, home, life and we can run several different lines like commercial and farm owners,” explained Jones. “Shelter was originally MFA, approximately 40-years ago, so it has it’s roots in the farming and agriculture communities, which is something they kept and maintained.”
According to Jones, they have the ability to write with several different companies, which includes a brokerage firm where they can go out and write high-risk insurance or several other different things out of Shelters realm. Most of what Shelter does is the automotive, life, farm and home insurance, but have the ability to assist with any appetite the customer may have.
“Each policy is different,” said Jones. “Actually, every insurer is a different risk. They have different needs, different ideals of what they need and my job is to make sure they understand what they’re getting and to couple with their needs, as well as what we can offer.”
Jones went on to say, that in the simplest term, it all comes down to protection. Being able to protect against all the unknowns or the “what if’s.” According to him, everyone can “what if “ things to death, but his job is to make sure all the customers “what if’s” are covered.
“Trying to cover all those ‘what if’s’ can be and probably is one of my greatest challenges, because sometimes if you don’t ask the exact right question, you don’t get the answer you need,” explained Jones. “You have to be able to ask the right questions to make sure the policy your selling is the right policy for the customer.”
All to often people can “pigeon hole” where this person belongs or this is where that person belongs, but Jones said that Shelter and himself take pride in finding out what the true situation is and finding out exactly what the customer needs.
“It can also be a matter of what they don’t need. I always tell people, even if they don’t have insurance through me, I’d be more than happy to sit down and look at their existing policy and go through it to see if I see any holes,” said Jones. “It’s an insurance review, which is never bad for anybody. The average person doesn’t understand an entire policy. But regardless of where they have the policy from, it’s part of my fiduciary responsibility to make sure people understand what their policy is.”
Jones is located at 220 South Broadway in Elsberry and can be reached at 573-898-5603. Walk-ins are also welcome.
