For Coach Jason Grills and his 18 and under Missouri Ice softball team, the 2013-2014 season marked the end of an era.
Grills started his select team approximately three years ago and he has had the pleasure of watching it grow in both size and popularity ever since.
“We started with a group of girls from Elsberry and then built around them,” said Grills.
In the three years since its inception, the team has incorporated talent from places like North County, New Haven, Washington, Troy and Silex, just to name a few.
This year’s roster included Rebecca Almus from Elsberry, Bailey Baker from St. Ann, Ashley Brown from Silex, Taylor Cathcart from St. Charles, Katie Grills from Elsberry, Brittni Hagemeier from Elsberry, Madison Henke from Silex, Rachel Micke from Marthasville, Macy Mahorc from Troy, Kierstin Monzyk of New Haven and Alicia Shivers from Florissant.
“This is probably the most talented group I’ve had by far,” said Grills.
As in previous years, Grills and his team began their season immediately following the end of high school softball in the fall.
The Ice went undefeated and won first place in their first college exposure tournament this season, which set the tone for one of the most successful years Grills and the girls have ever had.
“We wound up doing seven tournaments this spring,” said Grills. “We had two first place finishes, three second place finishes, took fifth at state and unofficially finished sixth in Panama City.”
