Clopton-Elsberry IndianHawk WR/RB Raheem Porter carries the ball around the right side of the offensive line. Porter carried the ball eight times for 56 yards in the 64-36 win over the Principia Panthers at Homecoming.

For anyone that was near Clopton High School football field Friday night, that sound they heard was the Clopton-Elsberry IndianHawks blowing up, offensively that is, against the Principia Panthers to the tune of a 64-36 victory.

The evening was filled with pomp and circumstance due to homecoming, offense, yellow flags and a lot of points.

“We were very excited to have another game at home and of course the homecoming festivities helped our level of excitement before the game,” said Head Coach Lynn Nutt.

It showed, as the IndianHawks scored three touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game. All three TD’s were scored on the ground, QB Jack Hicks (2) and RB/WR Charles Fraction (1).

“Offensively, we had a game plan as to how the first four series’ would go, but after the first one and the successful on-side attempt, Coach [Matt] Spurling made the great observation that we should just go ahead and stick with what was working,” said Coach Nutt.

If the first quarter was any indication as to how the night was to play out it appeared as if the IndianHawks were to run away from the Panthers. However, Principia had different plans.

“We were extremely happy with how we executed on the offensive side of the ball, and being able to sub in a few more people this week helped us stay fresh,” said Coach Nutt “However, we all know that there are a lot of things on the offensive side of the ball we need to work on. Mental mistakes were the only things that showed up on film.”

Down 22-6 after the first quarter, the Panthers roared back scoring three TD’s in the second quarter. A 30 yard bomb from QB Matthew Gilman to WR Will Allen and then two rushing TD’s by Gilman.

The IndianHawks also added two scores in the second on a two yard run by Hicks and a receiving TD by Fraction. At the end of the half it was all tied up 30-30.

“Defensively, we were very happy with how we were able to stop the run early, especially after last week. Principia did a great job of adjusting to our defense after the first quarter and unfortunately we weren’t able to make adjustments until halftime, but Coach [Cary] Bibb did a great job making some minor changes that worked out for us the rest of the game.”

The second half belonged to the IndianHawks as they came out with a quick TD at the 10:07 mark on a quick pass from Hicks to WR Raheem Porter.
