Following a successful year for Elsberry’s varsity baseball team in which they became back-to-back District 5 champions, all eyes now turn to the American Legion Baseball Season.
This year Elsberry’s Legion Post 226 has thrown somewhat of a curveball and created two A teams.
The first will be managed by Jeff Keiser and coached by Mike Kelly and Kevin Hill.
The second will be managed by Jason Howard and coached by Pat Brennan, Don Richardson and Jason Turnbull.
Elsberry’s AAA team will be managed by Joe Pott and coached by Rick Phillips and Tim Mound.
Due to the extended high school baseball season, the Indian Sports Network was unable to broadcast any Legion games prior to May 31 when they began their coverage with a AA doubleheader against Bellville.
Those games were originally scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. but due to the rain that was in the forecast the first game was rescheduled for 11 a.m. and did not make it on the air.
Elsberry won the first game against Bellville by a final score of 6-3 and was again victorious in the second half of the doubleheader by a score of 9-2.
In further AA action on June 1 Elsberry defeated Creve Couer 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at home but lost steam in the second game and suffered a 2-0 loss.
Elsberry’s AA team is composed of Colby Martin, Payton White, Alex Gutermuth, Ryan Palmer, Matt Henry, Chase Bauer, Kellen McCann, Branden Bennett, Zach Richardson, Zach Rimel, Austin Bargen, Gavin Womack, Matt Gales, Josh Derrington, Dave Dietz, Andrew Martinson, Nick Kane and Callum Smith.
The team is managed by Gregg White and coached by Josh Faatz and Ryan McCann.
Doug Dietz is the team’s pitching coach.
“It’s early in the season but I am excited about the direction our team is headed,” said White. “I’m looking forward to coaching this talented group of boys.”
