With the first game of the season come and gone, the Elsberry Lady Indians are making their presence known after a 9-3 victory over the Louisiana Lady Bulldogs.
“Our girls did what they needed to for the most part,” explained Lady Indians Head Coach Trudy Bull. “We had a couple of mental mistakes that almost cost us the game, but we played through them and got the win.”
Going into the game, Bull stated her biggest concern was the unknown. According to her, it’s hard to know how the kids will react to the first game of the season. However, by the end of the game Bull said her concerns were that they were content in their lead and let it slip away.
“The team as a whole really did do a good job showcasing their talents,” said Bull. “They played well together with several contributing to the win.”
Going forward, Bull stated that her girls need to focus more on their mental game. Overall she said they hit pretty well during the game, despite a couple of errors. But their biggest focus needs to be on stopping the mental mistakes.
“I’d have to say my proudest moment was seeing them not give up and came through with the win,” said Bull. “But watching the other team score three runs in one inning, mostly due to throwing to the wrong base, was a hard thing to swallow.”
The Lady Indians took on the Clopton Lady Hawks on Tuesday, Sept. 3, here at home. According to Bull, they are a solid team but as long as her girls go out and do what she knows they are capable of, she is confident they will pull off another win. Although Clopton will be a good match up for the Lady Indians, Bull said in a previous interview that the real test will come when they face off against North Callaway on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and Palmyra on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
“Palmyra has always been a hard team for us,” said Bull. “Not because they are better than us, but because we have always let them get in our heads. But this year, we plan on getting in theirs. They will see a much different team on the field this season, I promise that.”
