The Elsberry Lady Indians basketball team captured their season opener on the road against the Christian High School Eagles on Monday night.
Elsberry took the lead early and never looked back as they cruised to a 36-23 victory.
Leading the offense was senior Tess Weakly scoring a team high 12 points, followed closely by sophomore Tyra Henderson with 11. The Lady Indians had a tough time at the charity stripe going six of 13 on the night.
“We got the win and that’s big,” said Coach Kari Koch-Dowell. “When playing a team you’ve never played before and not knowing what they were going to do was difficult.”
Despite playing a team they hadn’t seen before the Lady Indians defense helped secure the win.
“Offensively we haven’t quite gelled yet,” said Koch-Dowell. “However, the defensive effort was there last night.”
Elsberry will compete all next week in the Tip-Off Classic at Winfield. Their first opponent will be Christian High School on Monday Night at 5 p.m.
This will be the second time in a week that the two teams meet and for Koch-Dowell she likes the way the brackets starts.
“We know exactly what to expect and can game plan for Christian,” said Koch-Dowell.
