Although the season hasn’t gone quite as well as they would have hoped, Elsberry Indians Head Soccer Coach Dustin Robinson said they still look forward to the rest of the season to show their talents.
The Indians took the field for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 3 to play Mexico. However, they were unable to get anything going and suffered a 5-0 loss.
“With it being our first game of the year, we realized that we had some learning to do,” explained Robinson. “We have eight new players to our program, but we came out of this game learning a little bit of what varsity soccer is all about.”
Next they took on Hannibal on Friday, Sept. 6 where once again they would see defeat, 5-2. But according to Robinson, they had a short bench due to three starters out of the lineup for either sickness or one who had a concussion.
“I thought we had some guys step in and give us a big lift,” said Robinson. “It was a warm night, if we could’ve taken away the 15 bad minutes in the second half, we probably could have won the game. We lost 5-2 but I feel we outplayed Hannibal for 60 of the 80 minutes.”
Ben Rhoades had both goals on Friday night with Jacob Braden and Mason Cameron coming through with the assists. According to Robinson, Grant Black played outstanding in goal by stopping 19 shots. However, mid way through the second half they gave up four goals in a matter of 15 minutes.
“We could have given up but instead we managed to win the last 10 minutes of the game and even scored a late goal,” said Robinson. “I am proud of the guys not giving up and continuing to play with heart. We still need to work on our defense and be more consistent, but once we start moving up and down the field together, we will not chase the ball as much and won`t run ourselves into the ground.”
According to Robinson, it’s hard to tell they are making progress, especially if the person doesn’t know much about soccer, but never the less he is pleased. He said their goal is still to provide Elsberry with its first District Title in the school’s history.
“The boys are going to give it all they have to achieve that,” said Robinson. “We look forward to this season, especially when we get everyone healthy and available.”
