It was chance of a lifetime for the Elsberry Indians as they participated in the Superfan Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Taking on the West Hancock Titans, Indians Head Coach Ryan Parker said he knew they were in for a tough game.
“I knew they were a good team going in and they didn’t disappoint as they were possibly the hardest team we have placed all season,” said Parker. “I thought we would have to play our A+ game to even have a shot, which obviously we didn’t.”
Parker went on to say how anyone watching could see the difference between a highly experienced team, when their top seven guys are seniors, compared to a team that really hasn’t played together until this year.
“People maybe don’t realize that kind of continuity and what that does for you but they were a good team and have a really good player in Paxton Harmon,” said Parker. “I mean it is what it is. We went up there and lost to a good team, in a neutral site and overall it was a great experience for us.”
Although the Indians lost 55-36 Parker explained, as he has done several times before, that if they stick to the scouting report they will always have a better shot at winning. In this case the scouting report was to not give Harmon any good looks, which according to Parker they were able to do throughout the first half, only giving Harmon five-points.
“The other part to this is, we are giving zero help off of the parameter on the dribble drive and your responsibility is your man and it goes away from what we always teach, which is you got to give help, you got to have help responsibility,” explained Parker. “We knew the threat of all five guys on the floor and we said the only person that’s going to give help off the dribble drive would be Kenny Lesley at the rim, which was in the second part of our scouting report but were unable to follow.”
