The Clopton-Elsberry IndianHawks were running on all cylinders on Aug. 22, delivering a 50-22 stomping to the Winfield Warriors to make the joint-schools team 1-0 on the 2014 football season.
It was sweet revenge for the thumping the IndianHawks took in Head Coach Mike Scheibel’s first game last year at Winfield.
“Our guys were more prepared,” Scheibel said. “We spent last year teaching plays and spent more time this year getting in shape. Our kids hardly cramped at all in the heat index sauna that caused a late 8 p.m. kickoff.”
However, the IndianHawks were just as hot as the weather, with quarterback Stephen Talbert running for two touchdowns and throwing for another.
“It was pretty impressive for a sophomore,” Scheibel said. “Talbert led the team in rushing with 136 yards and threw two touchdown passes. I believe the future is bright for him.”
