In the Aug. 6 issue of The Elsberry Democrat readers were treated to the story of Maurice Illy, a local resident who served his country both during and after the Korean War as a boom operator on a KC-97 mid-air refueling plane.
Illy flew all over the world with his crew before leaving the military in the late 1950s, at which time he married and began working on his family’s farm in O’Fallon.
Illy and his family relocated to the Elsberry area in 1971 and he spent the next several decades leading a peaceful and fulfilling life as a farmer, his war experiences now far behind him.
Those experiences were brought back to the forefront of his memory this May, however, when Illy had the opportunity to take an honor flight to Washington, D.C. with approximately 50 other veterans from Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.
