Four Elsberry students place in VFW Essay contest

Terry Martin, Commander of the Elsberry VFW Post 9064, recently announced the winners of two essay contests sponsored by the local VFW. In the High School contest, the 2012 Voice of Democracy Essay, junior Anne Heintzelman (shown right), placed third among local high schools. The prompt for high school students was, “Is the Constitution Still Relevant?” High School English teacher, Sarah O’Brien, facilitated the completion of the assignment for Elsberry students. The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest is exclusively for middle school students with a prompt this year of “What would you say to our Founding Fathers”. English teacher, Tori Towery assisted the students with the assignment. Eighth graders placing were Joel Kopecky (shown left), first; Hannah Barber (shown second from left), second; and Connor O’Brien (shown second from right), third. Each student was awarded a certificate and cash prize on behalf of the V.F.W. for their finish in the contest.
