Five games in five days for Elsberry Post #226 ‘AA’

After back-to-back losses the Elsberry American Legion Post #226 ‘AA’ squad faced a grueling stretch of five games in five days.

June 18

Elsberry vs Hannibal

During a rough first inning against Hannibal on June 18, the Elsberry American Legion Post #226 'AA' team met on the pitchers mound to give a pep-talk to starting pitching Drew Farley (St. Peters). Hannibal won the game in the fourth inning by forfeit.

First came a added home game against Hannibal on June 18. Elsberry started the evening with only nine players, meaning there could be no margin for error or injury.

Drew Farley (St. Peters took the mound for Elsberry. He lasted only one inning giving up six runs on five hits. Joe Greisbauer (Troy) followed Farley in relief, unfortunately for Elsberry he didn’t fare much better getting only two outs and giving up five runs on four hits.

Brandon Mound (Elsberry) came on to get the final out in the second and shutdown Hannibal in the third.

After a slow start on offense Elsberry heated up by the third. Then the inevitable happened…an injury.

Farley was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third and was unable to continue. Elsberry was forced to forfeit the game due to only having eight players. The 11-3 loss was only their fourth of the season.

June 19

Elsberry vs Creve Coeur

On June 19 #226 AA team played a tough game against Creve Coeur in Elsberry defeating Creve Coeur by a score of 12-7.

Everything was working right for Elsberry, from the strong pitching, solid defense, and the strong hitting.

Jeremy Jennewein (Eolia) started the game pitching for Elsberry going 5.1 innings allowing four runs on nine hits. Andrew Kennedy (Troy) came on in relief to pitch 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits, one being by way of a two-run homerun.

Elsberry fell behind early in the game by three runs but didn’t give up. The offense came to life in the third inning scoring two runs to get within one of Creve Coeur. In the fourth, the offense took the lead scoring three more runs. Elsberry then scored two more in the fifth before having a big inning in the sixth when they scored five runs.

Not giving up, Creve Coeur tried mounting a comeback in the seventh inning but Elsberry’s defense held strong.

“This was an emotional victory for Elsberry putting them back in the win column after dropping their last three games improving their record to 10 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie,” said Head Coach Tim Mound.

June 21

Elsberry at West

On Friday June 21 Post #226 traveled to O’Fallon to take on West. West defeated Elsberry 8-3 in a very tough game.

Luke Robbins (Clarksville) took the mound for Elsberry pitching five innings allowing five runs on four hits. Joe Greisbauer (Troy) came in relief in the sixth inning and gave up three runs on two hits.

“The offense for Elsberry hit the ball well tonight. They just couldn’t find the holes in West very good defense,” said Mound.

Scoring for Elsberry came in the fifth inning when Adam Sherrow (Elsberry) hit a double followed by a single from Robbins. Gavin Bettcher (O’Fallon) followed with a sacrifice hit scoring Sherrow and Robbins. Then in the sixth inning Mound got a walk to start of the inning, Greisbauer hit a single moving Mound to third base. A sacrifice bunt by Jennewein drove Mound in from third.

June 22


Elsberry at New Haven

On Saturday June 22, Post #226 AA team traveled to New Haven to play a double header.

Game one of the double header Elsberry defeated New Haven 7-6. Joseph Allen (Winfield) got the start for Elsberry and pitched six innings allowing five runs on 12 hits. Kennedy came in and pitched the seventh inning and got the save for Elsberry. He allowed one run on three hits.

“The offense for Elsberry scoring 7 runs on 10 hits looked very well today,” said Mound

In game two of the double header Alex Beauchamp (Troy) got the start for Elsberry and pitched a complete game allowing just one run on four hits as Elsberry defeated New Haven by a score of 6-1.

Elsberry offense plated six runs on 12 hits.
