Firefighters use Jaws of Life to extract victims

DemonstrationIt was a tragic and gruesome morning on Tuesday, July 16 as several members of the Lincoln County Firefighters were asked to respond to a drunk driving accident. It was actually a re-enactment for youths at Camp Avery in the Cuivre River State Park.

Four of the Camp Avery youths participated as “patients” and were extricated from the vehicles with the Jaws of Life while being cared for by Paramedics from Lincoln County Ambulance District. One was transported to a waiting Air Evac Life Team helicopter that landed at the “scene”. Lincoln County Ambulance District also held a classroom presentation on the topic.

These realistic demonstrations are effective in communicating a message to young people, and even adults, about the hazards involved with drinking and driving. They get to see the patients (dressed up with fake blood, broken bones and bruises) cut from the vehicles, packaged for transport and loaded into an ambulance and helicopter.
