Planning to attend college? Don’t know what to do and need help? Then the following event is a must, as Julie Basler, Elsberry High School Guidance Counselor, is announcing a FAFSA night on Feb. 13 at EHS. Anyone who plans on attending college is required to fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form for the federal government and this is a night where those interested will be able to sign up for a time slot to sit down with a financial aid representative from a local college in the computer lab at EHS and complete the FAFSA online forms.
According to Basler, this will be a great time to get questions answered and to be sure the FAFSA is completed and turned into the college of his or her choice on time.
To attend each person must do a couple things to prepare, prior to the night of the event. First, call Basler at 898-5554 ext. 214 to sign up for half hour time slots, which are available to local families by Feb. 5. Second, it is required to have a FAFSA pin number, which can be obtained at http://pin.ed.gov. Two numbers are required, one for the parent and one for the child. If the parent already has a child in college use the same pin.
It is beneficial for folks to do their taxes as soon as possible, as there is a new option available for an electronic transfer of data from the IRS to the FAFSA form (to use this option the IRS must have the persons taxes processed). No one is required to use this tax transfer; they may just manually enter their tax information that night. Also, both the parent and the student should attend, as this is their application.
