For the Elsberry R-II High School Cheerleading Squad the 2014-2015 season has started off with two very important firsts.
To begin with, this summer was the only one in which the school’s cheerleaders were able to afford to attend a camp.
That has never happened before in the entire history of the program.
Even more impressive is the fact that several members of the squad performed so well at camp that they qualified to cheer as members of the Capital One Bowl All American Cast.
“We had six girls on our team try out for All American Cheerleading and we all made it,” said Co-Captain Krista Giannakis. “We get to go to Florida and perform at the Capital One Bowl over New Year’s.”
Elsberry Cheerleading Sponsor Reagan Skaggs said that as far as she knows this is not only the first time that any Elsberry cheerleader has made the All American Cast, but it is also the first time that the school has ever even had anyone try out.
Skaggs said that to have six of her girls try out and for all of them to qualify the first time is an indication of just how far the cheerleading program at Elsberry has come.
The official Capital One Bowl halftime performance will take place in Orlando on Jan. 1, 2015 and will be televised nationally on ESPN-TV.
Giannakis will be joined at the event by fellow squad members Brittany O’Brien, Jasmine McCullough, Alayna Conrad, Megan Henry and Hannah Barber.
