Residents at the Elsberry Healthcare Center will soon be enjoying the outdoors in a whole new way.
“We wanted to open up an area where the residents could go and be outside,” said Linda Haake, administrator of the Elsberry Healthcare Center.
The new outdoor space, which is being built by Martin Construction of Eolia, will allow residents to spend time in the garden planting flowers or vegetables in a fenced-in area complete with benches and walking paths.
“It will be a safe area that can only be accessed from the inside of the building,” said Haake.
Builders will also be adding an indoor area for those residents who wish to enjoy the outdoors from a distance.
“On the inside of the building we will have a dayroom featuring a fireplace,” said Haake. “There will also be a sitting area where the residents can enjoy playing games or participating in other activities.”
In addition, Haake is planning on adding a cooking area and kitchenette where residents will be able to have refreshments.
“Construction has really gone pretty well,” said Haake. “Even with the snow and the temperatures outside we were able to get all the walking paths in right away and we’re hoping to be finished by the end of February or the beginning of March so we can be out there this spring when the weather starts warming up.”
Despite all of the noise and activity, residents seem to be enjoying the ongoing construction.
“I don’t think it’s been a distraction to the residents at all,” said Haake. “I think they find it interesting. They come down each day to see what has been completed and they like to watch them work.”
When the project is completed, Haake plans to have an open house and invite the public.
