Elsberry Post 226 vs Sullivan Post 18

Elsberry American Legion Post 226 “AA” (l-r): Tim Mound-Manager, Wayne Farley-Pitching Coach, Joseph Allen-(Winfield), Jeremy Jennewein-(Clopton), Andrew Kennedy-(Troy), Luke Robbins-(Clopton), Adam Sherrow-(Elsberry), Brandon Mound-(Elsberry), Alex Beauchamp-(Troy),Gavin Bettcher-(O’Fallon), Drew Farley-(St.Peters), Rheed Leake-(Clopton), Joe GreisBauer-(Troy), Vince Hollacher-(Clopton), Jim Beauchamp-Assistant Coach and John Jennewein-Assistant Coach.

On June 2 the Elsberry Double A Legion Baseball team traveled to Sullivan to play a double header at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. against Sullivan.

First game Brandon Mound (Elsberry) took the mound to start, and went deep, throwing all seven innings.

He threw 70 pitches, had 10 strike outs, with no walks. With one tough defense behind him he threw a three hit shutout.

“Sullivan had their off speed pitcher on the mound for most of the game, throwing our timing off and had our Elsberry crew chomping at the bit to drive a pitch anywhere,” stated Mound. “We finally got them settled down and we put four runs on the board to end the game 4-0.”

Elsberry took their break and came out behind Kennedy (Troy) on the mound to start our second game.

Kennedy went four innings giving up one run in four hits.

“Despite the one run, Andrew did a great job in that second game. My pitching, so far, had done one awesome job holding Sullivan at bay in both games,” said Mound.

In the fifth inning Allen went to the mound with a tall order. keeping up with the two pitching performances before him, and keep up he did, he went three innings, for 30 pitches, giving up no runs.

“My entire infield was spot on both these games and with only one error played great,” said Mound.

Leake (Clopton), Beauchamp (Troy) made some great plays from the left side for outs, to help pitching. Brandon Mound (Elsberry) was shifted over to first base, a spot he doesn’t see much of, but plays it in certain pitching rotations. Made a great catch, snow coning the ball, when it was hit to right, with runners on, over his head, and then stepping on first, getting the double play, and getting us out of that inning. Ending Sullivans only real strike at putting another run or two on the board.

“Offensively, we laid back it seemed for the right moment in the fifth inning, when our sleeping giant awoke and blasted Sullivans pitcher for a nine run streak, putting them in the books 9-1.

“I can’t say enough about this Double A team. From the oldest to the youngest, they get the job done, they never give up, they keep each other going in the tough areas and the coaches and I want to express how proud we are of this group. I know it’s still early, but from what we’ve seen so far out of this group, it’s going to be exciting, said Mound.
