Elsberry High School hosted the South Shelby Cardinals in the state sectional academic team meet on April 24.
The two teams competed in a best of three matches with Elsberry going down in defeat in a hard fought contest. South Shelby took an early lead and eventually defeated Elsberry 310-240 in the first match. The second match was much closer. The lead went back and forth and the match was tied at 280 on question 48. South Shelby earned the tossup and one bonus on question 49, taking a 20 point lead. The last question was attempted by Elsberry, but was incorrect. South Shelby will now progress to the state tournament in Columbia on May 3rd. Even though they lost, the Elsberry Team is proud of their finish that left them as one of the top 16 teams in Class 2A.
Elsberry advanced to sectional play after winning districts at Monroe City. Braden Spratt was named All-District player. He scored more points than any other player in the district. The team’s record going into sectional play was 28-13, with many of those losses coming from larger 3A schools. Also, the team won the EMO conference title after defending Montgomery County, a team who had won the previous four matches by several hundred points.
First year coach, Joe Hunter had this to say about the team’s season of play, “I am very proud of the team’s progress this year. Much of their success has to be placed on shoulders of, (previous coach), Mr. Tillotson’s efforts.” Mr. Hunter has also put out a plea to any students that are interested in participating in a fun academic challenge, which is essentially a team version of Jeopardy; contact him for next year’s team.
Members of the team are Braden Spratt, Kristy Burkemper, Jacob Sabella, Brendan O’Driscoll, Ethan Miller, Amy Georgie and Eli Gladney.
