Students at Clarence Cannon Elementary School participated in a math carnival on May 1 and 2 in the elementary gymnasium.
The event was organized by Title I teachers Diane Dietrich, Carol Spratt and Kristen Hagemeier.
Also assisting with the carnival were members of the National Junior Honor Society made up of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students as well as a number of NHS students from Elsberry High School.
The carnival’s events were geared toward each grade level’s curriculum in mathematics.
They included graph interpretation, measurement [linear, mass and time], number sense, money, fractions and mental math flash cards reinforcing all areas of mathematics [geometry, multiplication, division, base ten, addition and subtraction].
The flash card activities were presented in correlation with games such as “Toss Across”, “Big Dice”, “Yahtzee” and “Hands Down”.
“All of this is only possible with the help of volunteers,” said Dietrich. “There were many parents who came and helped with the set-up, tear-down and operation of centers. That made it much easier on us.”
