The Elsberry Auxiliary Unit 226 is hosting a Veterans Dinner at noon, Saturday, Nov. 10, at the American Legion Post in Elsberry. All veterans and one guest are invited to attend.
“You do not need to be a member of the American Legion, VFW or any other Veteran Organization,” said Linda Koch. “We would like to extend the invitation to the spouses of deceased members so they may enjoy time with other veterans and spouses.”
In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. A congressional Act of 1938 proclaimed Nov. 11 as a legal holiday – a day to be set aside to honor veterans of World War I. In 1954, striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans” amended the Act. Thus Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
“Please take the time this week to honor and thank America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” said Koch.
