When little children are asked by adults to list the things they dream of becoming when they grow up, they say everything from a doctor to a fireman to even an astronaut.
Not so many years ago another common answer was that of locomotive engineer.
Whether that is still the case or not, Elsberry native Jared Stone is now living out that dream.
Stone works as a locomotive engineer for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. [BNSF] out of Quincy, Illinois.
“It’s as fun as it sounds but it can be very challenging depending on the track topography and the weight of the train,” said Stone. “The heaviest train I’ve run was over 21,000 tons with four engines and a total of 17,600 horse power. The job requires extensive knowledge of the railroad rules and regulations and a thorough understanding of the workings of locomotives and intrain forces.”
The track that Stone followed to get to his current position was not an easy one.
In fact, there were many twists and turns along the way.
