Lutheran hands Lady Indians season-ending loss at districts

The Lutheran Lady Cougars defeated the Elsberry Lady Indians during the first round of the district tournament on Feb. 21 by a final score of 55-21, officially bringing Elsberry’s basketball season to a close. Lutheran got off to a fast start and ended the first quarter with a 17-3 lead, but Lady Indians Head Coach Hector Bencomo said those numbers didn’t concern him. “That first quarter score was very deceiving,”

    The Elsberry Lady Indians recently celebrated a milestone for the second consecutive season. During a Feb. 17 game against Montgomery County Elsberry senior Tanner Bencomo scored her 1000th career point. Bencomo is the second Lady Indian to record such an accomplishment within the last two years. Elsberry’s Brittni Hagemeier, a 2014 graduate, put up her 1000th point last February.   • Black and Dugan sign to play football at college level

    Alex Black [at center], a senior member of the Clopton/Elsberry IndianHawks football program, signed to play college football at Central Methodist University in Fayette.

    The Clopton/Elsberry IndianHawks football program recently sent two of its senior athletes on to the college level. IndianHawks Alex Black and Collin Dugan, both students at Clopton High School, have signed letters of intent to play college football. Black will be playing for Central Methodist University in Fayette and Dugan will be joining the team at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis. “Alex [Black] was a great lineman for us,”

  • Elsberry’s energy ebbs at Bowling Green, flows at Mark Twain

    Elsberry Indian Terrez Blair flies toward the basket during a game against Bowling Green. Blair and his team lost to the Bobcats 59-25, but they turned things around a few night later with a 67-53 win over Mark Twain. Blair scored a career high total of 26 points during that game.

    The Elsberry Indians took to the road last week with three straight wins under their collective belts. Elsberry had defeated Liberty, Wellsville and North Callaway during the first week of February and were looking forward to a rematch against Bowling Green on Feb. 10. The Bobcats defeated the Indians by a mere two points during the Bowling Green Tournament in January and this was a chance to even the score.

    Elsberry junior Maggie Spratt put up a career high total of 20 points against Orchard Farm on Feb. 11. That wasn’t enough, however, to prevent a 45-40 victory for the Lady Eagles.

    The Elsberry Lady Indians lost two games in a row following their victory over Bowling Green on Feb. 9. The first of those two losses came at the hands of the Orchard Farm Lady Eagles during a Feb. 11 home game.
