Blair, Bencomo, Talbot and Boedeker take their final bows at EMO Senior Showcase

Elsberry’s senior basketball players got one last opportunity to shine at the high school level during the 2015 Eastern Missouri (EMO) Conference Basketball Senior Showcase on March 27. The event was held at Mark Twain High School and Elsberry was represented by seniors Terrez Blair, Amanda Talbot, Tanner Bencomo and Kate Boedeker.   • Lady Owls/Lady Indians come from behind to beat Canton

    The Lady Owls/Lady Indians recorded a 5-1 win over Canton at home on March 30. Pictured are Elly Boothe [#11], Angel Henke [#7] and Tanner Bencomo [#4]. Bencomo scored a goal in the first half off of a pass from Maria Gissenass to tie the game 1-1 prior to the half.

    The Lady Owls/Lady Indians obtained a measure of revenge against Canton on March 30 when they defeated them 5-1 on Elsberry’s home soccer field. “We played them twice last year,” said Head Coach Hector Bencomo. “The first time we lost to them by a score of 3-1.   • Indians Win Home Opener

    Cale Mackey took the mound for Elsberry during their home-opener against Pleasant Hill. The game was stopped in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule and the Indians took home the win.

    Coming off losses to Winfield and Festus during opening day of their 2015 baseball season, the Elsberry Indians were determined to right the ship and improve their record as things gained momentum. Due to a series of weather-related cancellations and rescheduled games, the team didn’t get that chance until March 28 during a doubleheader against Orchard Farm on the road.   • EHS Golf Team takes second at Montgomery County

    Elsberry’s varsity golf team traveled to Montgomery County on March 25 to compete against North Callaway and Montgomery County. The team took second place with a  score of 197. Montgomery County won the contest with a score of 173 and North Callaway shot a 239. Elsberry’s Gavin Hill [above] shot low for the match with a 38.

  • Indians suffer back-to-back losses to Winfield and Festus to open the season

    Indian Grant Black was selected as the Peoples Bank and Trust Player of the Game by the Indian Sports Network after Elsberry’s 5-4 loss to Winfield on March 21. Black’s RBI single in the first inning gave Elsberry an early 2-0 lead.

    The Elsberry Indians kicked off their 2015 baseball season with back-to-back games at Winfield on March 21. Elsberry squared off against the Warriors on their home turf during the first game and they got off to a quick start offensively.   • Lady Owls/Lady Indians notch first soccer win in program history

    Elly Booth [in white] scored seven of Elsberry’s nine goals in games against Fulton, Warrenton and Liberty last weekend. Booth also scored the only goal in the team’s 5-1 loss to Father Tolten on March 23.

    At the start of last year’s Lady Indians soccer season Head Coach Hector Bencomo stated that he and his team were determined to score at least one goal. After enduring the previous season in which the team was unable to record a win or even score a single goal, their determination to put at least one point on the board in 2014 may have seemed a lofty dream to some.

  • Carter inherits a veteran golf team

    Elsberry’s Alex Kinsler is just one of the returning veterans that Coach David Carter is looking to this season for team leadership.

    This season Elsberry’s golf torch has been passed to newcomer David Carter.   • Robinson hopes less is more in 2015

    With such a small and young team in 2015, Head Coach Dustin Robinson will be looking to veterans like Grant Black to help lead the Indians to a successful season.

    “This has already been an interesting year,” said Coach Dustin Robinson. Robinson is entering his second year as the head baseball coach for Elsberry’s varsity boys.     Head Coach Hector Bencomo said there is a renewed interest in soccer for the girls this year. That interest has brought a number of new players his way, including Ashley Hagan and Madysen Kinsler [in the foreground].
