Lutheran hands Lady Indians season-ending loss at districts

The Lutheran Lady Cougars defeated the Elsberry Lady Indians during the first round of the district tournament on Feb. 21 by a final score of 55-21, officially bringing Elsberry’s basketball season to a close. Lutheran got off to a fast start and ended the first quarter with a 17-3 lead, but Lady Indians Head Coach Hector Bencomo said those numbers didn’t concern him. “That first quarter score was very deceiving,”

    The Elsberry Lady Indians recently celebrated a milestone for the second consecutive season. During a Feb. 17 game against Montgomery County Elsberry senior Tanner Bencomo scored her 1000th career point. Bencomo is the second Lady Indian to record such an accomplishment within the last two years. Elsberry’s Brittni Hagemeier, a 2014 graduate, put up her 1000th point last February. With the number one seed at Districts locked up the Elsberry Lady Indians headed to Montgomery County on Saturday to take part in the first annual EMO Conference Softball Tournament.     For the third straight game the Elsberry Lady Indians offense was shutdown 7-0 Monday night against “Softball Powerhouse” Palmyra Lady Panthers in Elsberry.     Indians get number one seed as they look to enter Districts on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. in Monroe City, with their first game against Van Far.
