It was another tough road game for the Clopton-Elsberry IndianHawks in a Friday, Oct. 18 loss to the North Callaway Thunderbirds, 35-14.
North Callaway scored six points in the first quarter and eight more in the second quarter.
Clopton-Elsberry senior running back Rheed Leake scored a touchdown in the second quarter and junior wide reciver Collin Dugan caught a two-point pass to make it 14-8 at the half.
North Callaway scored 15 points and shut the IndianHawks out in the third quarter to make it 29-14 and pretty much put the game away.
IndianHawks senior quarterback Jack Hicks scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter on a one-yard keeper, but the point after play failed.
The Thunderbirds also scored in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
“We played well and even ran the ball on a team of large individuals,” said IndianHawks Head Coach Mike Scheibel. “North Callaway has some size that we don’t see very often.
“On defense, we struggled to stop their power game and so it became a match of strength. This whole year we haven’t really shown the ability to control the line of scrimmage and the fact that we did it on one of the biggest lines in the state was impressive.
“We need to continue to build and get better. This week is senior week and I want our guys to be reminded that there aren’t many opportunities left to showcase our talent. We also need a win for a chance at a district home game the following week.”
Leake carried 17 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. He also caught one pass for nine yards.
Hicks completed five passes in 12 attempts for 50 yards. He also ran 17 times for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore Jeremy Jennewein caught two balls for 25 yards. Dugan caught one pass for the two-point conversion.
Senior running back Devin Linton carried six times for 13 yards and caught one pass for 14 yards.
Sophomore running back Dillon Zumwalt carried once for 15 yards and had 72 yards on four kick returns.
Leake led the defense with 12 tackles from his linebacker position and blocked a kick.
Linton had eight tackles as a linebacker, defended a pass and punted five times for 163 yards.
Zumwalt had seven tackles as a linebacker and defended a pass.
Junior defensive linemen Alex Black registered six tackles and a quarterback sack.
Hicks had six tackles and senior linebacker Bobby Schlueter had five tackles and defended a pass.
Senior defensive back Ryan Booher had five tackles and junior linebacker Michael Werkmeister had four.
Senior defensive lineman Danny Somers had three tackles.
Junior defensive lineman Vince Hollocher had a pair of tackles, as did senior defensive lineman Matt Parinello.
Jennewein and one tackle and defended a pass. Senior linebacker Travis Kukyendall defended one pass.
The IndianHawks play at home at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 against the Harrisburg Bulldogs in the last regular game of the season.
