Elsberry man struck by train

An Elsberry man was seriously injured when his truck was struck by a train Wednesday in Winfield, according to the Patrol report. The accident occurred Sept. 18 on East Main Street at the railroad crossing. Time of the accident was 5:37 p.m.

According to the report, a 1994 Dodge Ram driven by Gary Nelsen, 30, of Elsberry, was westbound on East Main while the train driven by Robert Skien, 32, of Carthage, Ill., was southbound on the tracks. Nelsen failed to yield to the train, attempted to cross the marked railroad crossing (with activated lights and bells) when the collision occurred.

Nelsen was airlifted by ARCH medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.
