Students prepare for a trip to the ‘Land of Smiles’

Once upon a time in a school not so far away lies the “Land of Smiles,” a magical place full of toothbrushes and wrapped in dental floss. No this not another Mother Goose story but for the 300 Clarence Cannon Elementary School kids that are set to attend, it’s a fun way to learn how to properly maintain good oral hygiene.

Tooth decay is the leading chronic infectious disease among children in our nation, and Delta Dental of Missouri has set out to combat this issue by educating and inspiring young Missourians to adopt healthy life habits.

The cast of characters will be visiting local schools teaching students the importance of brushing and flossing properly, visiting the dentist, eating right, exercising daily and making healthy choices. Thanks to the newly-established collaboration with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ (DHSS) Preventive Services Program, the shows taking place as part of the annual tour will also underscore the importance of fluoride varnishes. The Preventive Services Program offers free fluoride varnish applications to children in Missouri schools. Together, Delta Dental and the Missouri DHSS aim to cross promote programming that goes hand-in-hand to help young school-age children establish and maintain oral health habits that will last a lifetime.

Between now and the end of the school year, two separate “Land of Smiles” casts will collectively reach more than 65,000 students at over 320 schools across Missouri. To learn more about this program, call 888-383-0008 or visit the Community page on Delta Dental’s web site, http://deltadentalmo.com.

They will make their appearance at Clarence Cannon Elementary on Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m.
