Missouri CCW permit change takes effect
Beginning Aug. 28, the Missouri Department of Revenue will no longer issue permits to conceal and carry weapons. Each county sheriff will issue the new permits and renewals, which will be valid for five years.
The change is in accordance with a portion of Senate Bill 75, which was signed into law by Gov. Jay Nixon on July 12. Permits issued prior to Aug. 28, 2013, will still be valid until their expiration dates.
Criticism of the DOR’s process of collecting information from individuals this year prompted the change. Last December, the DOR changed how it produces license and identification cards from the cards being produced at each bureau to the cards being produced at a single location in Georgia.
Some CCW permit holders objected to their permits being scanned in the process of sending the information for the licenses to the company in Georgia that produces the licenses. In addition, some CCW permit holders objected to Missouri’s list of CCW permit holders being shared with a law enforcement arm of the Social Security Administration.
