On July 11 Elsberry American Legion Post 226 ‘AA’ team played its third district game defeating St. Peters American Legion Post 313 by the score 7-4.
This was a well played and pitched game by Elsberry. Alex Beauchamp (Troy) pitched very well for Elsberry going six and 2/3 innings giving up just four runs. Andrew Kennedy (Troy) came in relief and faced just one batter getting the final out of the game.
Scoring for Elsberry got started in the first inning when Beauchamp surprised the St. Peters team by stealing home while the pitcher was in his wind up.
After which Elsberry didn’t score until the sixth inning when Luke Robbins (Clarksville) got a base hit to start the inning, then Jeremy Jennewein (Eolia) got hit by a pitch, then a sacrifice bunt by Beauchamp and a big hit by Joe Greisbauer (Troy) which combined scored four runs.
Elsberry got two more insurance runs in the seventh inning from Jennewein and Beauchamp.
“Strong offense and defense, along with a team with a strong heart and a huge will to win, held up for the victory,” said Coach Tim Mound. “I continue to be absolutely amazed at how well this team plays baseball together. It’s definitely a team with no ‘I’ in it, these young men need to hold there head up high, because they are a great representation to Post 226 and there respective towns.”
The next evening Post 226 ‘AA’ team played its final game of district play closing out their season losing to O’Fallon American Legion Post 388 12-7 in a tough game. Elsberry finished the season with an overall record of 18 wins, 11 losses, and 1 tie.
Elsberry fell behind early in the game and just couldn’t fight back. They came within one run before O’Fallon had a big seven run fifth inning which just knocked the wind out of Elsberry’s sail.
Jennewein pitched for Elsberry and got knocked around giving up 11 runs on 14 hits. Joseph Allen (Winfield) came in relief and gave up one run on two hits.
“This team finished fourth in district play for the season and I would like to say from the coaching staff of Post 226 Double A Baseball, this small roster of 12, from start to finish, has been a class act,” said Mound. “They have had a long hard road, with a roller coaster ride, but they never gave up, even when the deck was stacked against them, and each and every one of them are winners in my book.”
Post 226 ‘AA’ will have nine of 12 players participating in the All-Star game held in Washington this year, on July 27 at 4 p.m.
Three First Team Starters: Brandon Mound: Second Base; Rheed Leake: Third Base; Joe Griesbauer: Catcher; Three Second Team Players: Adam Sherrow: First Base, Alex Beauchamp: Shortstop: Luke Robbins Outfield; Three Pitchers: Jeremy Jennewein, Andrew Kennedy and Joseph Allen.
