The assurance of insurance; Koch knows the business

Protection from the unknowns in life is just one of the many reason people get insurance these days, so who better to serve a community, than someone who has been a known name in the industry for approximately 30-years.

Marjorie Koch has been with American Family Insurance since 1990 and for her insurance has been a life long career as she began in the industry when she was 18-years-old.

“I started as a secretary for Marian Phelps, with Phelps Insurance and Realty and was with him until he sold out to Larry Cordsiemon,” said Koch. “That was in 1977. I was going to quit at that time and stay home with my children but Larry didn’t know anything about property and causality insurance, as he had only ever done life and house insurance.”

Koch said she decided to stay, where she remained for a few more years, helping Cordsiemon get his feet wet. However, she would find herself back with him in 1983 and has been there ever since.

“When the opportunity for the American Family Agency came to be I asked [Larry] if he was interested, which he wasn’t. So I asked him if he cared if I applied for it and he said, ‘Have at it.’ Which is what I did and that’s how I got here,” said Koch. “I have been in Elsberry the entire time. I started in 1970 and I am still here today.”

Koch went on to say how when the current building was built it was almost like it was built for her intentions.

“We offer a full range of insurance from auto, home, life and business,” said Koch. “We don’t do a whole lot of commercial but we do have one of the biggest small business insurers in Missouri.”

Mainly, Koch said she does homeowners and automotive, with some life insurance policies mixed in. One thing she said American Family doesn’t do is health insurance, but they are able to broker it out.

“We also do notary bonds and things like that. I am able to handle those types of accounts as well,” said Koch. “We do farm insurance as well, which we have a big farm ranch line of policies.”

Although home and auto are her biggest forms of clients, farms are not far behind, especially due to her location on South Broadway. Also with American Family, as a whole, being centralized to the Midwest they are able to stay better connected with rural America and the farmers.

“We are looking at some explorations to opening up some other locations,” said Koch. “We recently purchased a small writers company that has licenses in places that we don’t and that should open up some additional opportunities for us, which includes the ability for customers to be able to reach us on a 1-800 number to receive a policy quote.”

Koch said American Family Insurance is looking to expand their network to farther reaches but will still maintain their roots with rural America and families. At the end of the day, Koch said she believes it’s their customer service that separates them from other insurance companies.

“American Family doesn’t claim to be the cheapest company in town, but we’re not going to be the most expensive either,” said Koch. “We’re not a high-risk company and a lot more conservative than anything and we pride ourselves on our customer service. Our mission is to be the most trusted and loyal insurance company around.”
