Over the Memorial Day weekend the Elsberry American Legion Post 226 Single A baseball team showed dominance winning their first tournament of the season going 4-0-1.
They won the championship with a 10-6 win over St. Peters. They also recorded victories over LeMay (13-3); Jerseyville (3-2) and Maryland Heights (15-4). They also battled to a 5-5 tie against St. Charles.
“Our boys really pulled together this weekend and played some great ball,” said Coach Gregg White. “It was a great start to what we hope to be an awesome season.
On offense the Single A squad was led by Matt Henry (9 hits, 11 runs); Dave Dietz (5 hits, 7 RBI’s); Payton White (5 hits, 7 runs); Colby Martin (5 hits) Ryan Palmer (7 runs) and Austin Bargen (7 RBI’s).
While the offense was dominant scoring 46 runs in five games, Coach White, gave praise to his pitching staff.
“It was a great job from our starters and the guys in the bullpen,” said Coach White.
The following pitchers allowed on 20 runs in five games: Zach Rimel, Dietz, Tyler Turnbull, Alex Gutermuth, Chase Bauer, White and Joey Marko.
After capturing the St. Charles Memorial Day Tournament title the Single A squad headed south the following weekend to Springfield to play in the eight team Kickapoo Springfield Tournament. The result was eerily familiar…another tournament title.
The tournament started off on May 31 with a masterful pitching performance from starter Zach Rimel who threw a “no-hitter” securing the 3-1 win over Glendale. White and Rimel each had a double and Kellan McCann had an RBI.
The second game against St. Peters was a battle with Elsberry topping their opponent 7-6. Dietz picked up the win. Henry, Dietz and McCann led the offense with a double by each. McCann and Gavin Womack had two RBI’s each.
In the championship game, Post 226 was once again dominant on the mound with a second “no-hitter” of the tournament thrown by Bauer.
Dietz recorded two doubles and three RBI’s. Henry also had three RBI’s in the 10-0 victory over Joplin.
“All of the boys had an awesome weekend,” said White. “Our pitching staff did excellent.”
