George Reid

George Calvin Reid, 79, of Elsberry, died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at St. Luke’s West Hospital in Chesterfield.

Mr. Reid was born on July 13, 1933 at home in Okete to John Shannon and Annella Martha (Branch) Reid. He attended school at the Reid Country School and at Elsberry, graduating in 1953. Mr. Reid served his country in the Korean War from 1953-1955, and following his marriage in 1955, he attended Kirksville State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Education. He returned to the family farm, farming for several years with his father. Careers off the farm have included Industrial Education instructor at the high schools in Winfield, Mexico and Bowling Green; and realtor with Century 21 and Drewel Realty.

He has been a member and elder at Mount Zion Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, member and deacon at Elsberry First Baptist Church, and was currently a member and deacon at Troy First Baptist Church. A strong Christian heritage is evident in his descendants and in his love for his church family.

George and Virginia Hazel Baker were united in marriage on June 17, 1955 in Summersville. This 57-year union was blessed with four children: John “Charles” (Shirley) Reid of Ottumwa, IA; Catherine Sue “Cathy” (Bill) Crouse of Duncanville, PA; David Calvin (Barbara) Reid of New Bloomfield; and Julie Annella (Chris) Wilson of Herndon, VA.

In addition to being survived by his beloved wife and children, his grandchildren are Kindra (Kevin) Reid Black of Des Moines, IA; Kristopher (Elizabeth) Reid of St. Paul, MN; Keith Reid of Ottumwa, IA; Mathew (Caitlin) Crouse of West Plains; Leslie Crouse of Clinton; Breanne Reid of Tazewell, VA; Jordan and Alyssa Reid of New Bloomfield; and Megan and Brighton Wilson of Herndon, VA. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Riley and Avery Black of Des Moines, IA.

He is also survived by his sisters, Julia Elisabeth “Betsy” (Don) Sisson, of Columbia; and Martha Jo “Joey” (Ryland) Utlaut, of Alma, as well as beloved nieces and nephews, and family friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation was held Monday, April 8, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Troy First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Troy First Baptist Church, officiated by longtime friend and pastor, Rev. Doug McGlaughlin and also Rev. Roger Hemmings.

Interment to follow in the Reid Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers: Kristopher and Keith Reid, Mathew Crouse, Kevin Black, Don Sisson Jr., David Wall, Larry Buck and Pat Moore. Honorary pallbearers were Brighton Wilson, Ralph Coose, Forrest Gladney, Perry Parson, John Sisson, and Craig Utlaut.

Judith Ann Helmick

Judith Ann Helmick of Winfield died Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the age of 70.

Visitation will be on Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Winfield.

Funeral Service will be Friday, April 5, 2013 at 10 a.m.
