Teacher Talk by Kim Jones
Elsberry Schools has the opportunity to have two programs to assist students in their education path. Both are offered during the day to students who need assistance to get to that ultimate goal of graduation. The first is the BRAVES Program. This program was started several years ago by current the middle school principal, Jason Miller. Coming on board this year to serve as the BRAVES coordinator is Elsberry Alumni, Charles Kinsler. The second is the MO Options program. Ryan Parker currently serves as coordinator for this opportunity for students. Each program has guidelines to follow to help students earn their high school diploma.
The Building Responsibility and Vision for Elsberry students (BRAVES) is currently in the home stretch of the current school year and are looking towards the 2013-2014 school year. At the high school level, students are looking towards life after high school, while some students are getting on track for tech school and others are getting prepared for the remaining years of their high school careers. One of the programs big priorities is to give students the opportunity to look to the future and to encourage them to make plans for building their life as a successful adult. At the middle school level, the staff is beginning to discuss with the students, the differences between life as a middle school student and that of a high school student. Some of the primary focuses include the effect of grades, coursework, and how their current decisions can shape their future, not only in school, but in the workforce and society as a whole.
The MO options program gives a student the opportunity to still graduate, which without this program they would not be able to otherwise. The two qualifications for this program are one year behind their co-hort group and 17 years of age.
