Clopton High student James Paul Coleman, 17, of Clarksville, has been bound over to Pike County Circuit Court for trial on a charge of making a terrorist threat.

Coleman was arraigned on the charge on Monday, Feb. 11 and faces a June 6 trial with a May 14 pre-trial conference.

The suspect was bound over after waiving a Wednesday, Feb. 6 evidence hearing to discern if a crime was committed and if there was a likelihood he was involved.

He remains incarcerated at the Pike County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

Coleman was arrested by Pike County Sheriff’s Deputies on Jan. 11 for mortal threats to school officials after an alleged physical altercation with a student.

A probable cause statement from Sheriff’s Deputy Jody Blaylock contends Coleman was in fight with another student that was broken up by Principal Larry Lagemann, Athletic Director Cary Bibb and teacher Lynn Nutt.

Agriculture teacher Keriann Friedrich told Blaylock that during the alleged fight, Coleman lunged at the other student and hit her.

Lagemann reported to authorities that it took himself, Bibb and Nutt to subdue Coleman.

Coleman was also “threatening to kill the faculty and staff at Clopton High School,” according to the deputy’s report in county court files.

Nutt told Blaylock that Coleman said “I will kill you,” to him and threatened to get a relative’s help to create a scene reminiscent of a recent school shooting on television.

The Newtown, Conn. shootings had occurred less than one month prior and received prominent TV coverage.

Coleman also reportedly told Clopton authorities he had a .22 rifle at home and access to “many other firearms,” according to Blaylock’s report.
