In a recent study published in Science Daily, test subjects were presented with scenarios from both the world of politics and the world of sports.
Regardless of other factors, when certain competitors and/or groups of competitors were presented as having an advantage over their opponents, the study subjects overwhelmingly rooted for the perceived underdogs to win.
This should come as no surprise to anyone.
After all, it’s the same psychological principle that makes us root for Rocky Balboa when we know that Apollo Creed is the superior boxer, or inspires us to cheer at the end of the movie “Rudy” when we know that the poor guy is just out of his league and trying to compensate with grit and determination.
