Sandy Creek Bridge closing date changed to August 6

Posted on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Beginning Monday, Aug. 6 at 8 a.m., the bridge on MO 79 over Sandy Creek north of Foley will be closed so a new, wider bridge can be built in the same location.

The date change came following a report that the contractor was having complications getting all the material together by the original closing date, Monday, July 6.

The new bridge will be 32 ft. wide with 12 ft. lanes and 4 ft. shoulders. MO 79 will be closed up to 45 days to accomplish the work, and a financial incentive has been provided to the contractor to open the road earlier. The contract for the new bridge was awarded to Bleigh Construction of Hannibal, MO for $2,329,489.02.

Trucks and other traffic will be detoured over MO 47, US 61 and Route B. Local and tourist motorists are being detoured onto Routes Y, W and B. “We have specific signs directing these travelers toward this detour,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Erik Maninga. MoDOT also will include message boards recommending local and tourism traffic could use Routes Y to W to B as an alternate route of travel. All traffic normally traveling on MO 79 should use US 61 to US 54 to Louisiana; traffic normally traveling on MO 79 to Interstate 70 should use US 61 south to Wentzville. Detour maps are available online at http://modot.org/northeast.

“We worked with area officials and the community to include additional signing, a secondary detour, as well as changed the completion date and added a financial incentive to encourage even earlier completion,” explained Maninga. “The new plan will minimize the inconvenience for drivers and area businesses,” he added.
