Last week, the family of Sherri Wood, 51 of Elsberry received DNA results confirming that the body pulled from the Mississippi River on August 7 was that of Wood.
Getting back the DNA results have been a long time coming. After initially sending them out in August 2011, it wasn’t until this past February that information was provided that the DNA test was lost. Wood’s family member Greg Bufford contacted News Channel 4 to help find out why the hold up. After the investigation, it was revealed that the DNA Test was in a drawer in St. Louis and never sent out to be tested. Ten months later the results have finally been revealed.
In a thank you letter to the town of Elsberry, Bufford stated “Sorry that this thank you took so long, but we were waiting for proof.” (That letter can be seen in this week’s issue of The Elsberry Democrat).
The body was found floating by boaters in a slough on the Missouri side, near the 254-mile marker just seven miles north of the Winfield Lock and Dam.
Wood went missing on July 8, from her home located on the 1200 block of Apple St. Elsberry Police Chief Robert Bodley said a note was found on her front door that led them to believe Wood may have committed suicide. A rigorous search was conducted in the woods surrounding her home.
After a call came in later that day stating a pair of shoes was recovered down by the river, Elsberry Police and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department began to search the water for any further evidence. According to the report, officers found bare foot prints leading into the water and no prints led out.
The Elsberry police Department were the lead investigators on the case until July 15, when the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department obtained control.
