After a rough start to the season and sitting with a record of 4-6 the Elsberry American Legion Post 226 AAA Baseball Team headed to Cape Girardeau for the Fighting Squirrel Classic June 7-10.
In their first game June 7 they faced off against Jackson Senior Babe Ruth and got a big win 7-1. Justin Bray got the win while pitching a very solid seven inning complete game allowing just one unearned, giving up just six hits, striking out six and walking three batters.
Offensively Travis Trent was 2-4 with one RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases and one walk. Brennen Hurley went 1-3 with one RBI, two runs scored, one hit by pitch and one sacrifice. Luke Beachler went 3-4 with three RBI’s, one triple one run scored and one stolen base. Ryan Hurley went 1-3 with one RBI, one walk and one stolen base. Dalton Entwistle went 1-3 with one walk. Caleb Krone went 1-2, one run scored, two walks and one stolen base. Bray went 1-3 with one walk. Damon Kersting went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
In game two on June 8 they faced the Park Hills Redbirds and got another win by a final of 5-3 with Harold Vanbibber picking up the win. Offensively Brennen Hurley went 1-4 with one RBI, one run scored and one triple. Beachler went 1-2 with one RBI, one run scored, a walk and a stolen base. Bray went 1-3 with one RBI and a walk. Entwistle went 2-4 with two RBI’s, one run scored and two stolen bases. Kersting went 2-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Krone was 1-3 with a walk. Jordan Powell was 1-4.
In game 3 on June 9 against the hometown team Cape Girardeau Elsberry rolled to a 9-2 victory to put them in the championship game with some stellar pitching by Joe Stretch going all seven innings for a complete game win allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out one.
