On Friday, March 23, American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 226 will host a Casino Night at the American Legion Hall, Highway 79 North, in Elsberry. Themed gift baskets and other items will be on silent auction. Merchandise raffles will be drawn throughout the evening. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the games begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets will be available at the door and all the proceeds from the event will be used to support veterans, enlisted men and women, education of Americanism, local scholarships, and the Elsberry community.
Unit 226 hosts one major fundraiser each year. In the past, Unit 226 has donated to the American Legion ballpark improvements, Elsberry city flag fund, Veterans’ homes and hospitals, Haiti Relief Fund, Girl Scouts of America, American Legion Creative Arts Festival, Honor Flight, Elsberry After Prom, Therapeutic Horsemanship and other local benefits and organizations.
“We have established the Rosemary Shaffer Memorial Scholarship for graduating seniors seeking to further their education,” said Casino Night Chairman Linda Koch. “We have landscaped the entrance to the Elsberry city cemetery and planted a ribbon of pink tulips for Breast Cancer awareness on Legion grounds.”
The American Legion Auxiliary is a sponsor of Girls State. Four girls from Elsberry and Silex will be attending this year thanks to monetary donations from SAL, DOM Club and Study Club. Recent projects of the ALA unit included working with Elsberry Schools to send 35 boxes to Missouri soldiers deployed in Afghanistan at Christmas; donating Girl Scout cookies to the USO at Lambert field; donations to tornado victims at Fort Leonard Wood, adopting a family at Christmas and monetary donations to local food pantry.
“We honor our local veterans on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day with a dinner,” Koch said. “Community support of the Casino Night will enable the Auxiliary to continue serving the Veterans, enlisted personnel and the community.”
