Vaughn takes birthday flight
Martha Vaughn [right] prepares to take a helicopter flight over Elsberry and New Hope in celebration of her 99th birthday.
In July The Elsberry Democrat brought readers the story of Martha Vaughn, a long-time Elsberry resident who had recently celebrated her 99th birthday.
Vaughn, who is a descendant of Elsberry’s founder Robert Elsberry, turned 99 on July 2 and marked the occasion with a birthday lunch at Broadway Flowers and Fountain with family and friends.
When asked by a friend whether there was anything special that she wanted to do in honor of her birthday, Vaughn stated that she had always wanted to ride in a helicopter but doubted she would ever get the chance.
Word spread and within no time at all Vaughn’s friends at her church in New Hope had arranged a helicopter flight for her as a birthday surprise.
