There are a great many things for parents and students to think about when the beginning of a new school year rolls around.

Unfortunately, one of the most important things to consider is also the one that most commonly gets overlooked – safety.

This year Elsberry Superintendent Dr. Tim Reller is determined that the issue of school safety will receive the focus it deserves.

One of the areas in which Reller has seen safety slip through the cracks is that of school bus stop signs.

“When there is a stop sign out on a school bus people need to stop and not try to pass,” said Reller. “That applies even if a bus happens to be in the school parking lot at the time. We’ve had issues with that in the past. We have students getting on and off those buses and we want to make sure they’re safe.”

Reller said he also recommends that parents talk with their children about bus stop safety.

“Make sure they know not to try to get on the bus until it has made a complete stop and the doors have been opened,” said Reller. “Also, they need to be instructed as to the proper way to exit the bus so that they get off as quickly and safely as possible.”
